Home Energy Reports

The Home Energy Reports provide information on your energy use and offer easy, personalized tips to help you save.  Most people don't realize how much money they could save just by making small changes in lifestyle.  We provide personalized tips for your home and show how much money you could save.  After reviewing the report, log-on to the website to get even more tips.

The reports also compare your home's energy use to that of 99 other homes in your neighborhood.  These 100 home groupings are chosen based on home size, home type (apartment or single-family), and heating source.  Information on home size and heating source is taken from publicly available databases, so it may not be available or 100% accurate.  You can update this information by logging into the website

Answers to some of your frequently asked questions about this program:

  • Will the City use this information to charge me more for utilities?  No, the information is solely for your personal use.
  • Will anyone else know about my usage? No, your personal information is only provided to you.  For all other comparisons, average numbers are used, so that all individual customer's energy usage is private and confidential.
  • How can I opt out of the program?  If you are not interested in the program, just call (650) 329-2161 or email homeenergyreports@cityofpaloalto.org
  • Don't factors other than size of home and heater type influence energy use?  Of course.  Efficient households take a number of the steps that we recommend to reduce their energy use.  The number and types of appliances and electronic equipment in the home influence utility consumption, as do the number of people in the home and the amount of time that they are at home.  Some of these factors are in your ability to control.  This report will help you decide whether or not to make changes.
